Day4 19th October Atherton to Hann River roadhouse

Up and out after refuelling by about 8am.
Drove through Mareeba, not taking too much notice as we’re also chatting to Harry for his birthday.

A general plan is to head to Lakelands roadhouse, perhaps have some lunch or coffee and enquire about the aboriginal cave art just outside Laura.
We came across these paintings on our first trip here 30 years ago and often talk about them..
About 5 kms outside Laura, just off the highway.
A small walk to get there but well worth the effort again

41c by the time we return to the cars.
A hot sweaty dash into Laura for a cold beer and a debrief. Laura consists of a main road  with the quinken hotel, a general store, called General Store and not much else. They do have very cold beer which is delicious.

We leave the blacktop road and head onto the dirt road heading into old Laura. About 25 kms into Lakefield National park we arrive at the Laura homestead. This and some of the workers quarters and out buildings are all that are left of the original Laura township.

Back on the dirt track to Laura and heading hopefully to the Hann River Roadhouse for the night.
Like most roadhouses, they are are a one stop shop. Food, fuel, and camping.

The camping here is fabulous. Toilets, showers, resident emu and peacocks and all manner of birdsong.

Everyone is suitably exhausted tonight. Beverages around the fire that we didn’t light( because it’s still 35c).

Delicious green curry for dinner and into the swag.
