Day5 20th October Hann river roadhouse to Archer river

Enjoying the ambience of this lovely camping ground this morning, not in too much of a hurry.







Our friendly emu hanging out with us at breakfast time funnily enough.

Tire check and reducing pressures before we start. Today is a mix of black and dirt road , so nice to be prepared.




First stop is Musgrave telegraph station about an hour or so into the journey. Hasn’t really changed in the 30years since we’ve been here. 
Although a nice area under the house for coffee and snacks that I don’t remember.
The cows a still wandering over the airstrip and the tree we camped under is still there. Funny things that you  remember.....








Returning to the combination black top and dirt road again. Loads of roadworks on the dirt road with huge machines grading the road. 
All is working well, good contact with each other  by radio, although I’m glad it’s our channel as a bit of nonsense is spoken as boredom and tiredness set in.

Arrived in coen , stopping in the store for some fruit and a birthday card for Brad who’s big day is today.
Funnily enough not a great selection of cards but i did find a kids 3rd birthday card which will suffice. Bit of art work and he’ll never know. 
The chap at the store, I think was pleased with company and a laugh that he just  gave it to me.

The group decision is to continue on to Archer river, which will be our destination for the night and in honour of brad’s birthday we will defer lunch till we get there.
Allegedly, archer river roadhouse is world famous for the archer river burger and one is guaranteed to be sated after consuming. Seems appropriate 





No one is disappointed, the cost was $ 20, never paid that for a burger!!

Waiting for it to cool down a bit before setting up camp, still 35 in the shade, lovely breeze tho. Restful afternoon.

Went for a walk down to the river. As dry today as it was all that time ago, but it does flood and the depth markers on the side of the road do measure up to 6 meters.

Day 8 23rd October Weipa to Berti creek via Old telegraph road

As cliched as it might sound, tonight the swag is set beside a babbling creek and I’m looking forward to sleeping beside it.....  but before that happens there’s a bit of work to be done. Bit of a disorganised and later departure from Weipa, little bit of shopping and  fuelling.  With 11 people in 5 cars, it’s a bit like herding cats but we made it eventually. Retracing our steps out of Weipa until we are looking for and find a left hand turn to Batavia Downs.  A private property that provides a track to cut through to the Old Telegraph road. It’s a rough old road but only approximately 25 kilometres so much easier than completely retracing our steps. About 3 hours through some great looking scenery, extraordinary and huge anthills before arriving at Bramwell roadhouse for lunch.  Really nice people but pretty expensive fuel. Day6 21st October Archer river roadhouse to Weipa

Another travelling day and not too many kilometres to get under our belt. Left Archer river about 9ish, stopped within about an hour or so for a lookout photo op, where the old road north meets the new upgrade. I think that was the highlight of the journey. From there it was a mix of dirt and bitumen roads but both were manageable. The only challenges were the complete whiteout that would occur after being overtaken by the big fast travelling beasts. Arrived in Weipa about lunch time and it’s seriously hot!! Glenn has booked we greens into an aicondtitioned donger.... A donger is a very basic tin cabin that were originally built for workers, mines etc. This one is a beauty, called fisherman’s shack, with 5 beds only one is a double but it’s very cool inside!,! The rest of the crew are camping down on the beachfront, so I’m a bit jealous when I visit.  Beautiful view, lovely breeze. Day13. 28th October Thursday Island, Horn Island, Loyalty Bay

An early start today as we are off on an adventure. We have  a little trip planned to firstly visit Thursday Island and then a tour of neighbouring Horn island. We have organised the trip through our camp ground and the owner has also offered to drive us to the jetty ( not far , next beach)  We had concerns parking at the jetty, just because of the safety of leaving everything we own there for the day. So this option worked perfectly. Onto the ferry for 1 hour trip to Thursday Island, again marvelling at the turquoise blue of the water. Met Liberty who is husband of the husband and wife team running the Torres Strait Heritage tour company. This bloke knows so much, a TI native but could seriously talk under water and then some. We visit the cemetery, which we have been to before. Memorable because of the huge amount of essentially unmarked graves of the Japanese pearl divers.
